What is a Retarder?

A retarder is an auxiliary braking device used in large commercial vehicles (e.g., buses, trucks) to reduce the load on the primary braking system (brakes).
It is typically used to prevent brake overheating during extended downhill driving. There are two methods:
  • Hydraulic Retarder – Often used with automatic transmissions.
  • Electric Retarder – Motor braking method.

What is a retarder temperature sensor?

The retarder temperature sensor measures the temperature of the fluid (usually oil) inside the retarder.
It is an essential component for preventing overheating and ensuring efficient system control.

Key Role

  • Retarder hydraulic oil or component temperature monitoring
  • Overheating prevention Preventing retarder performance degradation and failure

  • Temperature information transmitted to ECU Control and warning light displays

  • Limit retarder operation when necessary

Sensor location

  • Attached to the inside of the retarder unit or to the fluid flow passage
  • Typically located in the oil line, housing or retarder unit casing

Sensor type

NTC thermistor (Negative Temperature Coefficient Thermistor) The resistance decreases as the temperature increases

PT100/PT1000 (RTD sensor)

High-accuracy platinum resistance temperature sensor

Symptoms of failure

  • Retarder overheat warning light illuminates
  • ECU retarder restriction mode entered
  • Deterioration of retarder performance (weakened braking)
  • Diagnostic Test Card (DTC) Error Code Example: Temperature Abnormality Related to Pxxxx
