What is EMS S8 XPI?

Applied to Scania’s latest commercial vehicles, EMS S8 XPI is the 8th generation Engine Management System (EMS). It works with the advanced XPI (Extra High Pressure Injection) common rail fuel system and is mainly used in Scania’s Euro 6 Step E and later Super series engine platforms.
It is one of the core ECUs of Scania’s latest Super Powertrain (from 2021 onwards).

Overview of EMS S8 XPI

Item Details
Name EMS S8 (Engine Management System, Series 8)
Fuel System XPI (Extra High Pressure Injection, common rail)
Applicable Vehicles Scania engines (DC13, DC16 – 2017~2021), Scania Super engines EMS S10 (from 2021~), Euro 6 Step E
Operating Environment High-efficiency combustion, low emissions, high reliability engine control
Technical Features Precise multi-stage injection + integrated emission control + high-reliability CAN network

Main Functions

Category Function
Fuel Control Ultra-precise high-pressure common rail injection (3–5 stage injection control)
Aftertreatment Integration Fully integrated control of DPF + SCR + ASC
Air Control Electronic VGT, EGR, throttle control, etc.
Emission Reduction Complies with Euro 6 Step E, minimizes CO₂ emissions
Energy Optimization Integrates PTO, Eco-roll, cruise control, downhill control
Diagnostics & Protection OBD, NOx monitoring, overheat/pressure protection, DTC storage
CAN Communication Linked with GMS (Gearbox), COO (Vehicle Management), RET (Retarder), TMS, etc.

XPI System Features

  • Pressure range: up to 2700 bar or higher

  • Electric fuel pump: optimized for output control

  • Individual injector calibration possible

  • Sensor-based fuel quantity control (temperature, load, emissions)

Main Controlled Components

Component Description
XPI Injectors Ultra-precise electronic injection
Rail Pressure Sensor Key for high-pressure control
Fuel Dosing Module SCR AdBlue injection
NOx Sensors (pre/post) Real-time emission performance check
DPF Sensors Temperature, differential pressure sensors
EGR/VGT Actuators Controls airflow and pressure
Crank/Cam Sensors Reference for ignition timing
Electronic Fan/Pump Control Executes thermal control strategies

Common Fault Examples

Symptom Possible Cause Related DTC
Delayed/failed start Low rail pressure, faulty crank sensor P0087, P0335
Power loss Clogged DPF, NOx sensor error P2002, P20EE
AdBlue warning light Dosing pump or sensor fault P204F, P207F
Increased fuel consumption Injection correction failure, faulty EGR P0401, P0216

Precautions When Replacing Injectors/Parts

  • Injector ID code must be entered
  • EMS S8 supports auto-calibration via learning function (reset through SDP3)
  • Individual injector calibration possible
  • Function check/test must be performed after replacement
