What are COO7 and COO8?

COO7 and COO8 are types of electronic control units (ECUs) mainly installed in Scania trucks and buses. They serve as central gateway/communication modules used to integratively control and diagnose multiple vehicle systems.

Overview of COO7 / COO8

Item COO7 COO8
Purpose Control and communication gateway for vehicle electronic systems Next-generation or extended version of COO7
Functions
  • CAN communication relay
  • Vehicle status monitoring
  • Diagnostic data collection
  • Control of key functions (e.g., ABS, EBS, ECU connections)
  • Includes all COO7 functions
  • Additional data processing capability
  • Enhanced connectivity (e.g., telematics, OTA capability)
Installed Vehicles Specific Scania truck models (P/G/R/S series, etc.) Latest Scania vehicle models
Diagnostic Tool Can be tested with Scania SDP3 (Scania Diagnos & Programmer 3)

Main Functions of COO7

  • CAN Communication Hub (CAN Gateway)
  • Relays communication between multiple ECUs such as engine ECU, brake system (EBS), transmission system, and instrument cluster.
  • Vehicle Security and Authentication
  • Built-in Scania-specific security mechanism: some components are paired with COO7, requiring authentication when replaced.
  • Vehicle Status Monitoring
  • Records and stores data such as mileage, fuel consumption, and fault history.
  • Integration with Diagnostic Systems
  • Linked with Scania’s diagnostic tool SDP3 (Scania Diagnos & Programmer 3) for diagnostics, code resets, and configuration changes.
  • Function Control
  • Controls certain vehicle functions such as engine start, immobilizer, lighting, power distribution, etc.

Main Functions of COO8

  • Enhanced CAN Communication Hub and Data Processing
  • Integrates/separates multiple CAN buses for management
  • Provides faster processing speed and data transmission compared to COO7
  • Collects and relays real-time vehicle data
  • Enhanced Security and Encryption
  • Strengthened component authentication and VIN linkage
  • Prevents counterfeit ECU components
  • Supports potential OTA (Over-The-Air) software updates
  • Vehicle Diagnostics and Logging
  • Stores diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
  • Records status of various sensors and modules (e.g., engine, brakes, transmission)
  • Full vehicle inspection possible via SDP3
  • Integrated Vehicle Function Control
  • Controls functions such as start/stop, body electrical control, lighting system, air conditioning, instrument cluster, etc.
  • Communicates with various function modules (BCM, BWS, etc.) for state management

Notes

If COO7/COO8 fails or malfunctions, various electronic issues may occur in the vehicle. Status should be checked via diagnostic tool (SDP3), and firmware updates or replacement may be required.

Example Fault Symptoms

  • Vehicle unable to start
  • Communication errors displayed on the instrument cluster
  • Failure in specific systems (e.g., all modules connected via CAN communication inoperative)
