What is MR? (Motor-Regelgerät)

In Mercedes-Benz commercial trucks Euro 4 and Euro 5 versions, MR (Motor-Regelgerät) refers to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). This MR controls the overall operation of the engine and is the core controller for meeting Euro 4/5 emission regulations.
MR serves as the central hub of engine control, comprehensively managing fuel injection, air flow, turbo control, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), and engine protection functions.

German name: Motor-Regelgerät
English name: Engine Control Unit (ECU)
Applicable vehicles: Mercedes-Benz Actros, Atego and other Euro 4/5 compliant vehicles

Main Functions of MR ECU

Category Function
Fuel Injection Control Precise control of injection quantity and timing per cylinder
Intake/Boost Control Intake calculation, turbocharger control
Exhaust Gas Control EGR and NOx adjustment according to Euro 4/5 standards
Power and Torque Control Communicates with CPC to perform driving strategy
Engine Protection Restricted operation in case of coolant temperature, oil pressure anomalies, etc.
Maintenance/Limp Mode Limits output or blocks ignition in case of severe faults
CAN Communication Management Interacts with CPC, ICU, ACM, etc.

MR Electrical/Communication Structure

Component Description
Power Terminals +30 (constant power), +15 (IGN), 31 (ground)
CAN Communication Connected to CPC (central controller), ACM (aftertreatment), TCM, etc.
Sensor Inputs MAF, EGR sensor, coolant temperature, fuel rail pressure, etc.
Actuator Control Injectors, EGR valve, fuel pump, lambda sensor heater, etc.

MR Control Points under Euro 4/5

Item Euro4 Euro5
EGR Usage O O (more precise control)
SCR (AdBlue) X X (applied from Euro 6)
Fuel Pressure Control High-pressure pump + rail sensor
NOx Control Mainly EGR and fuel strategy
Engine Models OM501LA, OM457LA, OM926LA, etc.
Fault Handling Reduced power / limp mode execution

Symptoms of MR ECU Failure

Symptom Possible Cause
Power Loss EGR valve sticking, fuel pressure issues, MAP sensor error
Starting Failure Sensor fault, immobilizer issue, ECU power failure
Excessive Black/White Smoke Faulty fuel injection, mismatched air volume
Limp Mode Activation Protection function triggered (e.g., overheating, low oil pressure)
Warning Light On MIL, engine warning indicators
CAN Error Communication failure with CPC, ICU, etc.

MR vs. MCM Electrical/Communication Structure

Item MR (EURO 4/5) MCM (EURO 6~)
Control Scope Engine-only control Integrated powertrain control
Aftertreatment Control None Cooperative control with ACM
Communication Structure Simple CAN Multiple CAN + gateway
External Unit? Yes Mainly attached directly to engine
