What is OPC?

Opticruise is Scania’s dedicated Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) system for commercial vehicles. The gearbox has a manual structure, but clutch and gear shifting are automatically controlled by the vehicle ECU.
The driver can focus on driving without gear or clutch operations.

Key Features for Commercial Vehicles

  • Improved shifting efficiency and fuel economy
  • Analyzes engine torque and RPM in real time and shifts automatically at the optimal timing.
  • Reduces unnecessary high RPM use, lowers fuel consumption by utilizing the maximum torque range.
  • New G25 and G33 gearboxes can improve fuel economy by up to 8% (according to Scania).
  • Reduced driver fatigue
  • No clutch pedal; reduces fatigue in urban traffic or long-distance driving.
  • Automatic gear selection at start (e.g., low gear selected automatically for heavy loads + slopes).

Opticruise (Euro 5 Version) Main Functions

  • Automated Manual Transmission (AMT)
  • Based on a manual gearbox, ECU automatically controls shifting and clutch operation.
  • Both fully automatic models (no clutch pedal) and semi-automatic models (with clutch pedal) exist depending on country specifications.
  • Basic Driving Modes

The Euro 5 version has limited mode selection, but generally provides two modes:

  • Standard Mode: Balanced fuel economy and performance.
  • Power Mode: Shifts at higher RPM for uphill or heavy load situations.

※ The latest Euro 6 Opticruise includes more modes such as Off-road, Eco-roll, etc.

  • ECU Communication and Diagnostics
  • Opticruise communicates via CAN with EMS (engine control), OPC (vehicle parameter control), GRS (gearbox module), etc.
  • In case of failure: TCU or clutch sensor error, gear shift failure, vibration, warning lights, etc.

  • Integration with Retarder and Cruise Control
  • Works with Scania retarder, automatically activating during downhill driving.
  • When cruise control is used, appropriate gear selection and retarder control are automatically applied depending on conditions.

Limitations of Euro 5 Opticruise

Item Description
Mode Limitations No advanced driving modes such as Off-road, Rocking, etc. like the latest versions.
No Eco-roll Fuel-saving function using coasting was introduced mainly from Euro 6 onwards.
Lower Load Detection Precision Simpler sensors and algorithms compared to G25~G33 gearboxes.
Slower Clutch Response Starting from stop is slower and less smooth compared to the latest models.
