What is a fan clutch controller?

The fan clutch controller is an ECU or control module that controls the operation of the fan clutch based on temperature data from the engine, coolant, transmission, and other components.
While mechanical fan clutches are automatically controlled by bimetallic springs based on temperature, electronic fan clutches are controlled more precisely through this controller.

While traditional fan clutches operate based on coolant temperature and engine and transmission temperature data, the controller developed by Seonjin operates based on various data, including coolant temperature, oil pressure, and other factors, enabling more precise control.

Key Features

Function Explanation
Fan operation control Fan ON/OFF or speed control (PWM method, etc.)
Temperature sensor reception Collects signals from various temperature sensors, including coolant, intake, transmission, intercooler oil, and hydraulic pressure.
Vehicle CAN communication linkage Communicates with engine ECU and operates according to driving conditions
Diagnostic function(DTC) Error code generated when fan clutch or sensor malfunctions
Delay control logic Fan operation is suppressed when cold, and operates quickly when hot.

Example of operating logic

  • Immediately after starting (cold engine) Fan operation suppression Fuel saving & Warm-up acceleration

  • Engine overheating detected while driving (e.g. coolant temperature above 95°C) The fan controller signals the fan clutch Fan starts operating

  • When the transmission oil temperature rises Cooling the transmission cooler by fan operation

  • When the air conditioner is running Fan running to cool the condenser

Failure symptoms and diagnostic points

Symptoms Possible causes
If the fan is always spinning Controller signal failure, entering limp mode
The fan is not working Sensor input error, PWM output failure
Overheating problems persist Clutch itself is faulty or control signal is missing
DTC error Example: P0480, P0483 (fan control circuit problem)
