What is EMS S6 HPI?

The EMS S6 HPI system is one of Scania’s 6th generation Engine Management Systems (EMS), applied to diesel engines using the High Pressure Injection (HPI) fuel injection method.
Item Description
EMS Engine Management System (Electronic Engine Control System)
S6 6th generation EMS version
HPI High Pressure Injection: Scania’s high-pressure injection method
Applicable Vehicles Some Scania Euro 3~5 vehicles (e.g., early P, G, R series)
Main Functions Engine injection control, fuel amount regulation, emission control, safety protection

Overview of HPI (High Pressure Injection) System

HPI is Scania’s proprietary technology, a camshaft-based high-pressure injection system.

Unlike common rail, the camshaft mechanically generates high pressure, while the EMS electronically controls injection timing.

Features

  • Hybrid system combining mechanical + electronic injection
  • High pressure generated by camshaft → directly transferred to injector
  • Injection timing and quantity precisely controlled by EMS S6

Main Functions of EMS S6

Function Description
Injection Quantity Control Calculates fuel injection based on RPM, load, temperature, etc.
Injection Timing Control Calculates optimal ignition timing
Intake/Exhaust Control Controls VGT (variable turbo), EGR valve, etc.
Cooling/Heater Control Adjusts engine warm-up and fan operation
Emission Control Executes fuel strategies to reduce NOx, PM, etc.
Diagnostic Function (OBD) Monitors sensor & actuator status, stores DTCs
Communication Integrates via CAN with EECU, RET, COO, etc.

Main Sensors and Actuators

Component Description
Injector (HPI) Mechanical pressure + electronic timing control
CAM Sensor Detects camshaft position (key for injection control)
Crank Sensor Measures rotational speed and piston position
Airflow Sensor (MAF) Measures intake airflow
Temperature Sensors (coolant, intake, fuel, etc.) Adjusts fuel strategy
Pressure Sensors (intake, boost, fuel, etc.) Recognizes engine load and protection needs
EGR Valve, Turbo Valve (VGT) Controls exhaust gas and boost
Throttle Valve (some models) Controls engine air intake

Fault Diagnosis Examples

Symptom Possible Cause Related DTC
Starting failure / no fuel injection Cam sensor or crank sensor fault P0340, P0335
Power loss Injector fault, poor fuel supply P0201~P0206
Excessive smoke HPI injector leakage, faulty EGR P0401, P0402
Engine stall Internal EMS S6 circuit fault U0401 (including CAN error)
Even after replacing faulty sensors and wiring check, DTC keeps appearing Internal ECU circuit fault -
