What is an ECU?

An ECU (Engine Control Unit) is the core control module of a diesel engine, responsible for fuel injection, back pressure/turbo control, exhaust aftertreatment (DPF/SCR), and fault diagnostics.
It collects data from input sensors (crank/cam, coolant/intake temperature, pressure, etc.), analyzes this data using the CPU and memory inside the ECU, and controls fuel injection quantity, injection timing, EGR valve position, and more in real time.

Main Functions of the ECU

Function Description
Fuel Injection Control Adjusts common rail injection pressure and timing
Back Pressure / EGR Control GHG control for NOx emission reduction
Turbo Control Regulates boost pressure of the turbocharger
Exhaust Aftertreatment DPF regeneration, SCR dosing control
Diagnostic Function Stores/clears DTC codes, real-time monitoring
Communication Function Based on J1939 CAN communication, integrated with transmission ECU and others
